Bryston BAX-2 – Active Crossover

The Bryston BAX-2 is a high-performance digital signal processing (DSP) electronic crossover designed specifically for Bryston's active loudspeaker systems. Unlike a conventional passive crossover located inside a loudspeaker, the BAX-2 operates before the power amplifiers. It divides the full-range audio signal into separate frequency bands and sends each band directly to its dedicated amplifier channel.

This active approach eliminates the need for a passive crossover between the amplifier and the loudspeaker drivers and allows the crossover characteristics to be precisely optimized for each Bryston loudspeaker model.  The BAX-2 accepts a balanced analog stereo signal from a preamplifier through XLR inputs. The incoming analog signal is converted into digital audio using 24-bit / 96 kHz conversion. A high-performance DSP then performs the crossover processing. Depending on the loudspeaker configuration, the BAX-2 can provide 2-, 3-, or 4-way crossover operation for each channel. The processed signals are subsequently converted back to analog using eight DAC channels. These outputs feed fully discrete, balanced analog output stages.
